The unforgettable 2020 was like a roller coaster ride. And at the end of the year, there were some trends that really pissed us off. Bollywood Hungama, in this special column, lists the trends that we are really sick of.
1. Bollywood is considered a drug hub
The death of Sushant Singh Rajput and the resulting leak of celebrity WhatsApp chats has led a section of media and individuals to treat Bollywood like a drug mafia. After a while it got too strong because that perception was forced into people’s throats. The narrative built up was that the celebrities here only know how to get high and high all day long. The fact that our artists work so hard 24/7 and the industry supports millions of people has been forgotten.
2. Boycott campaigns
Every two or three days, a section of Twitterati is offended by something or the other. And once they are slightly offended, they launch a “boycott” campaign. Initially it scared the people involved in this business as everyone thought it was going to have a big impact. But the repeated use of this scare tactic quickly showed that this trend was laughable and did not result in an actual boycott of movies or movie stars. It didn’t take long to realize that many of those calling for a boycott of Bollywood don’t really watch too many movies.
3. The diatribes of Kangana Ranaut
The talented actress is now known less for her acting skills and National Award wins than for her Twitter drama. She “officially” joined the microblogging site earlier this year and has started sharing her opinions on every topic under the sun. Some of her tweets also put her in trouble and led to the partial demolition of the bungalow and a huge chunk of farmers speaking out against her. Still, she refuses to learn her lesson and continues with her rants. Even her ardent fans, who previously loved her for her avatar “Dabangg,” now think she should close her trap.
4. Chalo Maldives
Initially it was great to see the celebrities adjusting to the ‘new normal’ and deciding to take a break by heading to the Maldives. But then netizens were quickly bombarded every day with pictures of Maldives vacations from TV and Bollywood stars. It seemed like more than half of the industry vacationed in beach paradise, as if there was no other place to vacation. We understand that for a lot of celebrities, they got paid to travel and uploaded their shots. But we are sure that there are many places in India where our celebrities could have traveled and maybe have the same fun and frolic?
5. Celebrities claiming their OTT movie would reach over 200 countries
This one was an epic failure. With so many movies going straight to OTT instead of theaters, stars have been duly questioned about it by the media. And these celebrities were urged to replicate a PR or Team OTT line that their film would now find a simultaneous release in “ over 200 countries ” and, as a result, they would get more viewers. But here’s a fact check – there are only 195 countries in the world! In many countries like China and North Korea, most streaming platforms are not available. And there are no audiences in many other territories when it comes to Hindi movies. It’s puzzling that not a single OTT artist or organizer has done a simple Google check to fully understand their facts!
6. Fighting multiplexes with producers
For almost 7 to 8 months, theaters remained closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. And when they reopened, the operators and owners of multiplexes began to fight with the producers over various issues such as VPF waiver, revenue sharing, cinematic window reduction and OTT, etc. Some films like Principle was delayed a few weeks for this reason. Many wondered why the two sides could not resolve these issues during these 7-8 months when business was at a standstill. Valuable time could have been saved.
