EXCLUSIVE: Legendary brought in Independent Spirt Award nominee Atsuko Hirayanag to direct an adaptation of Constance Verity’s latest adventures with Awkwafina. The film is based on the fantasy adventure novel written by A. Lee Martinez. Golden Globe Award winner Awkwafina will star in the film based on a script by John Raffo. Jon Shestack will produce.
First published in 2016 via Saga Press, the story centers on Constance Verity who, for mysterious reasons, was thrown into a battle with the supernatural at the time of her birth and has since saved the world from disaster. . Now in her 30s, Connie’s biggest dream is to live a simple life – settling down with a boyfriend, doing a boring office job, finding friends and just being NORMAL. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy to stray from the supernatural if you are, in fact, the Chosen One. The follow-up novel, Constance Verity saves the world, was released in the summer of 2018 and Martinez is currently writing the third book.
Born and raised in Japan, Atsuko Hirayanagi is an award-winning writer and director based in San Francisco. His first feature film Oh Lucy! was an extrapolation from his student under the same name. The short won the Wasserman Award / First Prize for a Graduate Film and has also won over 35 awards around the world, including at Cannes, Sundance, Chicago and the Toronto International Film Festivals. The screenplay for the feature film, a comedy drama set in both Japan and the United States, received the 2016 Sundance / NHK Award. The film was produced by Adam McKay and Will Ferrell and was shortlisted for the Festival of Cannes. It was nominated for the categories “Best First Feature” and “Best Actress” at the 2018 Independent Spirit Awards. It is picked up by UTA.
