BTS fans got in anger after it was announced that a modern hanbok costume – a revamped version of a traditional Korean outfit – previously worn by band member Jimin was being auctioned. In fact, ARMY (that’s what the global BTS fanbase is referring to) has launched into a wave of news about the upcoming auction on social media, with many even speculating how much Jimin’s hanbok costume would fetch. . However, they are now to be greeted with severe disappointment as it has been learned that the scheduled auction does not happen after all. In case you’re wondering why, we’ve got the reason here. Read on …
Myart Auction, which was supposed to host the auction event for the hanbok worn by the K-pop superstar during a performance for NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in September, removed the garment from its list of online auction at the nth hour, and only a preview of the outfit was available as the rest of the auction went as planned on the same day. However, these were not about things going wrong or about a conflict of interest or any unfortunate legal hassle. All that happened is that the creator of Jimin’s costume got cold feet at the last moment and Myart Auction could not launch the offer without his approval.
“Designer Kim Ri-eul has been working through sponsorships since he created hanbok costumes five years ago. As this was the first attempt to sell his work, he felt immense pressure from the only commercial aspect being seen. In addition, he feared that commercial activity would undermine the global status of the artist who wore it. As such, after reconsidering the matter, we have decided to remove the item from the auction, ”read an official statement from Myart Auction.
Needless to say, BTS fans are disheartened by the news – such is their loyalty even without personal gain – that they have asked the auction company and designer to reconsider their decision. BTS Jimin Gallery deeply regrets the cancellation of the Jimin hanbok auction hosted by Myart Auction and conducted by Kim Ri-eul. BTS Jimin’s hanbok auction can show that hanbok is one of the iconic representatives of Korean culture and can be an opportunity to tell the world about Korean culture. As such, we ask designer Kim Ri-eul and the managers of Myart Auction to reconsider, ”reads their official statement.
So the modern hanbok costume worn by BTS’s Jimin will finally be up for auction. Let’s wait and watch.
