BAFTA Scraps Special Prize at TV Awards after Noel Clarke Controversy – Deadline

BAFTA has removed special awards from its televised awards this year following controversy surrounding its decision to present Noel Clarke with a similar gong in April.

The main televised prizes will take place on June 6, but there will be no scholarship or special prizes, which Idris Elba won last year. The BAFTA told its members it had “temporarily suspended” the awards as part of its review of procedures.

This follows criticism from BAFTA for suing Clarke’s Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award earlier this year, despite the charity being presented with allegations of sexual behavior brought against the Armored and Doctor Who Star. Clarke vehemently denies any wrongdoing.

The BAFTA said it tried to verify the allegations, but was unable to do so. The organization ultimately concluded that it would have been “inappropriate” to discontinue the attribution “on the basis of the extremely limited information available to us and the ultimate sources of which were unknown”.

Clarke’s BAFTA award and membership were then put on hold when The Guardian published an investigation into Clarke, in which 20 women accused him of behaving inappropriately. Clarke apologized if her “actions affected people in a way that I did not intend or achieve” but denies “sexual misconduct or wrongdoing”.

A BAFTA spokesperson said: “We recently announced that we are conducting a review of the processes governing the awards offered by the academy, so we have temporarily suspended the special awards and scholarships and they will not feature in the ceremony. of this Sunday. “

The decision to remove the special prizes at the TV Awards follows the fact that no gong was presented at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards last month. In 2020, Nicky Sargent and Vikki Dunn, founders of post-production facility The Farm, took home the special award.

The main TV Awards take place on Sundays at 7 p.m. Attendees in person will include Michaela Coel, Jodie Comer, Paul Mescal, Graham Norton and Billie Piper as BAFTA invites nominees in categories such as lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, entertainment performance, performance male in a comedy, and the female performance in a comedy.
