Bill Murray receives Modern Master Award from Santa Barbara Film Fest – Deadline

On Saturday, Bill Murray appeared to virtually accept the Maltin Modern Master Award from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Presented by Sofia and Roman Coppola, the award recognizes the screen icon for his long-standing contributions to the film industry. Most recently Murray starred in Sofia Coppola On the rocks, facing Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans, winning Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice nominations for his turn as the father of larger-than-life playboy, Felix Keane.

“I would like to say a few words before handing down the award… it is truly an honor to receive the Maltin Milk Award,” Murray told film critic Leonard Maltin, who gives the award his name. “When I found out I was involved with the award, I was taken by surprise, thinking you had passed away. I had come up with so many great things to say about you. But I was very happy to hear that you were still alive. This is my happy-sad moment.

Santa Barbara Film Festival Awards: Latest Oscar Nominated Directors Winners

Before accepting his award, on day three of the 36th annual festival, Murray sat down for a conversation with Maltin, offering a look back on his rich career.

One of the main topics covered by the Oscar nominee was his role in the iconic ghost hunters movie franchise. While praising the work of the late László Kovács – who was the DP of the original 1984 film – and his special effects team, the actor noted that the film was “quite legitimate” and “ahead of its time. “.

Murray also paid tribute to his co-stars, who helped bring the 1984 film to life. “The Four of Us, Ernie Hudson, Danny [Akroyd] and Harold [Ramis], we knew we were going to sink or swim together, so we were always looking for each other. We were constantly making sure that everyone was pumping and that everyone understood it, ”he said. “As far as improvisation goes, Harold was the spirit of the Ghostbusters, Danny was the heart of the Ghostbusters, Ernie was the soul of the Ghostbusters and I was the mouth of the Ghostbusters.”

In a conversation with Maltin, Murray also recalled how he was introduced to his longtime collaborator, Wes Anderson. “My agent kept sending me tapes of his first film, Rocket in bottle. Finally, they sent me the script at Rushmore and asked me if I wanted to meet him and I said, ‘It’s not necessary’, ”he recalls. “’He knows exactly what he wants to do. When are we shooting? “

Later, the winner spoke about his work as a writer and director. Although he boasts over 90 screen credits, Murray also co-directed the 1990 comedy. Quick change. As a writer he has 10 credits, including a 2015 special, A very Murray Christmas.

“I really consider myself to be, I should write. I really want to be a writer, ”he said. “I can write dialogue and scenes, but to write full length everything is different… I just didn’t get attached.”

While Murray admitted he enjoyed directing and believed he would do more in his career, he said the time needed to direct never ended up syncing well with his personal life. “I liked working with actors and I thought I understood actors, I could do it,” he said. “[But] when it was time for me to continue making films, I didn’t have that time to give.

Established in 1995, the Modern Master Award is the highest honor awarded by SBIFF.
