Daybreak Pictures Founder Hal Vogel Launches Ringside Media Venture – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: The founders of Daybreak Pictures, David Aukin and Hal Vogel, have left the scripted producer of Tinopolis Group, the latter launching a new business with Ringside Media, the investment vehicle backed by the French Newen.

Aukin and Vogel leave Daybreak after 15 years, during which time they oversaw the BAFTA-winning Riz Ahmed series Britz, drama by Claire Foy The promise, David Tennant series The politician’s husband, and features including that of Justin Kurzel True story of the Kelly Gang, which starred Russell Crowe.

Vogel’s new company will be called Slate Entertainment and represents Ringside Media’s second investment. Founded by Newen and The fall producer Gub Neal last year, Ringside previously took a stake in Fictionhouse, founded by former Royal Court Theater artistic directors Dominic Cooke and Kate Horton.

Vogel told Deadline his partnership with Aukin at Daybreak had “run its course” and it was time to “start something new” with the support of a “smart international sales company” in the form of Newen. , which is part of the TF1 group. . He declined to release financial data, but said he had “good support”.

Vogel plans to hire a small team over the next few months and is developing a list of “big and ambitious” projects in English. “It’s not a million miles from Daybreak’s DNA,” he said. “These are book titles that have kind of a true story element and great characters. There will always be an interest in politics, but with international appeal. It is also about finding new voices.

Vogel and Aukin will continue to collaborate on some projects in the future. Commenting on their Daybreak release, Aukin said, “It’s time to move on and for me to focus on a few pet projects. I wish Hal the best of luck with Slate.

Vogel added that their decision to leave Daybreak was unrelated to the issues currently facing Tinopolis, which suffered during the coronavirus pandemic and is at war with a group of former producers, to whom the production group owes 50 million pounds sterling ($ 70 million) after a controversial financial restructuring. He said Tinopolis had been “fantastic partners” for the past 15 years.

It is not clear if the Daybreak banner will continue. Tinopolis did not respond to our request for comment, while Vogel was unsure whether the brand would be kept alive in his and Aukin’s absence. “There’s a brand that represents some pretty sophisticated drama… if they can turn that into something, I really don’t know. I guess they’re going to keep the library running, ”he added.

In a statement on Vogel’s arrival at Ringside, Neal said, “Welcoming someone of Hal’s exceptional experience and skills into the high-end story space in the Ringside family is a fantastic opportunity. We are delighted to see his ambitious list of projects come to life and work together in the future. “Philippe Levasseur, international manager of Newen, added:” He is a multi-award winning producer with a very strong team spirit and our producers across Europe are eager to team up with him on series and films. top of the line.
