Dem Rep. Val Demings defends Mi’Khia Bryant shot – Deadline

Democratic Congresswoman Val Demings, the former head of the Orlando, Florida Police Department, said on CBS on Sunday Face the nation that the Ohio officer who killed Mi’Khia Bryant acted like “he was trained to do it.”

However, Demings later supported the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which contains a clause that individual police officers could face personal civil lawsuits. “And I think there are opportunities to prosecute these people on a personal level,” Demings said. “The ministry is always, or can always be, held accountable.”

Demings said Face the nation Host John Dickerson said police body camera video showed Ohio Constable Nicholas Reardon was acting right when he fired four shots at Bryant as she appeared to pounce on two other people with a knife.

Demings said Reardon acted “for the primary purpose of preventing tragedy and the death of the person who was about to be assaulted.” She added that police make “split-second decisions” while on patrol.

“Now everyone has the benefit of slowing down the video and freezing the perfect moment,” Demings said. “The street agent does not have this ability.”

Demings said she hopes the George Floyd Act doesn’t turn into partisan politics.
