Kemper wrote today: “The century-old organization that hosted the debutants’ ball had an unmistakably racist, sexist and elitist past. I was not aware of this story at the time, but ignorance is no excuse. I was old enough to have educated myself before joining.

She continued, “There is a very natural temptation when you are criticized on the Internet, to tell you that your detractors are completely wrong. But at one point last week, I realized that a lot of forces behind the criticism are forces with which I have sent my life to support and agree.

The century-old organization that hosted the debutante ball had an unmistakably racist, sexist and elitist past. I was not aware of this story at the time, but ignorance is no excuse. I was old enough to have educated myself before joining.

I unequivocally deplore, denounce and reject white supremacy. At the same time, I recognize that because of my race and my privilege, I am the beneficiary of a system that has delivered unequal justice and unequal rewards. There is a very natural temptation, when you are criticized on the Internet, to tell yourself that your detractors are completely wrong. But at one point last week, I realized that a lot of the forces behind the criticism are forces that I have sent my life to support and agree with.

I firmly believe in the values of kindness, integrity and inclusion. I try to live my life in accordance with these values. If my experience is any indication that organizations and institutions whose pasts fall short of these beliefs should be held accountable, then I must view this experience in a positive light.

I want to apologize to the people I have disappointed, and I promise that in the future I will listen, continue to educate myself and use my privilege to support the better society that I think we are capable of. to become.
