Netflix today announced on social media that two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson and Alisha Weir are joining the Working Title feature Mathilde based on the popular music scene version of Roald Dahl’s classic story.
Mathilde follows a young bookworm prodigy who fights with his parents and the headmistress of nemesis Trunchbull.
Thompson will play the role of Miss Trunchbull while Weir landed the title role in the film directed by Matthew Warchus. Warchus directed the musical, which won seven Olivier Awards 2012 and five Tony Awards in 2013. Ralph Fiennes was previously attached to playing Trunchbull. (Matilda the musical had the character of Trunchbull played by a man). Original playwright Dennis Kelly adapts the screenplay with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner produce for Working Title. Luke Kelly produces for The Roald Dahl Story Company. Sony TriStar will launch the feature in the UK while Netflix will be distributed worldwide.
