Entourage creator Doug Ellin defends HBO comedy in #MeToo Era post – Deadline

Between 2004 and 2011, HBO Entourage won top marks and numerous awards, including six Emmys and a Golden Globe. But in the wake of #MeToo, the Hollywood boy’s club comedy is seen in a different light.

On Tuesday, the show’s creator, Doug Ellin, spoke to Yahoo Entertainment and lamented the situation, which he said resulted from a “wave of virtuous PC culture.”

“I’m proud of everything we’ve done Entourage, and I certainly don’t think it’s something that should be a lightning rod, ”Ellin said. “You have to look at him for what he was.”

What it was, from Ellin’s perspective, was a “show… about friendship, loyalty and family,” which was “extremely realistic” to portray the Hollywood dynamic of its time.

“I do not think so Entourage was that vulgar boyfest that people like to paint like now, ”he added. “When we went out, the New York Times said we were the smartest show on TV!

Ellin suggested that, perhaps due to the culture shift of the past decade, HBO has not been promoting Entourage on its platforms at the level of its other acclaimed series, “hiding” comedy “in wish-fulfillment shows”.

“I blame myself a lot,” he said.

Saying that “a character on television should never be looked at as if they are the writer or actor behind that person,” Ellin also pointed out what he sees as a double standard from HBO. “Nobody says that about The Sopranos

As Ellin calls retroactive play against Entourage an “overcorrection,” he recognizes the importance of #MeToo and other social justice movements. “There must be a calculation and social injustices must [be addressed] in some ways, ”he said. “I hope we get to a place where there is equality for everyone, but there is also room for people to create their art and not be judged so harshly.

In a conversation with Yahoo Entertainment, Ellin also discussed how he would approach a Entourage restart in the current social climate. “If we restarted the show, it’s not that I would do it more on PC, but I would write it to the best of my ability to reflect the reality of the world right now,” he said. “Of course, it’s going to be written in a little nicer way, because that’s the world we live in.”

Broadcast for eight seasons, Entourage centered around movie star Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), watching him hunt women and navigate the tasteless Los Angeles terrain, with the help of his circle of friends and his agent, Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven).
