EXCLUSIVE: “Ajay Devgn is excited about his debut on OTT,” says Rajesh Mapuskar, director of Rudra – The Edge Of Darkness: Bollywood News

Bollywood Hungama was the first to announce that superstar Ajay Devgn is set to make his web debut. Yesterday an official announcement was made by the makers – Applause Entertainment and BBC Studios. The web series, Rudra – Edge of Darkness, is the official remake of the beloved British series, Luther and will air on Disney + Hotstar.

Rudra – Edge of Darkness will be headed by Rajesh Mapuskar. Protected by master filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, he made his directorial debut with Ferrari Ki Sawaari (2012) followed by the film Marathi, winner of a national award, Fan (2012). When Bollywood Hungama reached out to him, the excitement in his voice was palpable. Regarding the comments to the show’s announcement, he says, “The response is incredible. There is a lot of excitement. Mr. Ajay Devgn is coming to OTT for the first time and he is also excited for it. Lots of positivity has come our way. People are really looking forward to it and it puts a lot of pressure on us, especially on me as a director, to live up to those expectations.

How did he come on board for this gigantic undertaking? To which he replies: “Their project was ready and they were looking for a director. And anyway, I was in talks with BBC Studios. We were thinking about which show to go on. And then they told me about this show and asked if I would be interested in directing. I took a look at it and I was like “Wow”! Who was I to turn down a show like this? So I told them I was on it.

Rajesh Mapuskar praises Ajay Devgn. He says: “So far, whatever interaction I have had with him during script readings and meetings, he comes across as a very down to earth person. He wants to hear from you and know your point of view. He’s also quite patient and is a different Ajay Devgn than what we see on screen (laughs)! He is calm, shy and a man with fewer words.

Rajesh agrees that running a star is pressure but says, “It is cumulative pressure. But I don’t let that affect me. We’re all on the same page – me, Applause Entertainment, the BBC and Ajay Devgn’s team – and know what we want to accomplish. “

The official announcement of Rudra – Edge of Darkness states that the series will be released this year itself, in 2021. With 4 months of the year nearing completion, one wonders if it will be able to make it this year, given that webcasts are generally long and therefore take time to prepare. Rajesh Mapuskar says the 2021 release plan is underway, but there is a catch: “It all depends on the current situation regarding the pandemic. We’re aiming for a 2021 release, but we’ll have to see when the lockdown is lifted. He also confirmed that the shooting will take place entirely in Mumbai.

Rudra – Edge of Darkness is not Rajesh Mapuskar’s first digital release. He is also the co-director of the second season of the universally acclaimed Netflix series, Delhi Crime. Will it be difficult for him to juggle the two projects simultaneously? Rajesh says, “Not really. The Delhi crime is now almost over. So that I can fully concentrate my tan-man-dhan on Rudra! ” While Delhi Crime was co-directed by Tanuj Chopra, there will be no co-director on Rudra – Edge of Darkness. “I am the sole administrator of Rudra. Or should I say, whole and unique director, ”says Rajesh Mapuskar with a laugh.

Before signing, Rajesh Mapuskar shares his future plans, “(After Rudra – Edge of Darkness and Delhi Crime), I will not make one but two films in Hindi. I work on two consecutive shows. Now I want to go back to making two hours of storytelling. “
