EXCLUSIVE: “There are a lot of gimmicks and less dancing going on” – Sandeepa Dhar on Dance Reality TV Shows: Bollywood News

India has a very vibrant dance and song culture. Over the years, the countless dance reality shows have helped stimulate talent from different parts of the country. However, these dance reality shows also have their own drawbacks. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood HungamaActor-dancer Sandeepa Dhar shared her take on dance reality shows and what she thinks needs to be changed. The actress has been dancing since she was a little girl and is also a Bharatanatyam trained dancer.

When asked if dance reality shows have helped boost dance culture in India, Sandeepa said, “I really think dance reality shows have energized dance culture in India. . In India, we still don’t see dancing as a career option. But of course, dance reality shows have also helped bring many more forms of dance to the fore. It’s also giving a chance to someone sitting in a small town who has a lot of talent. It gave them the opportunity and a platform to showcase that talent. I think it’s great because now you have people from small towns and they are making a name for themselves. It shows that India has so much talent; we just need to spot it correctly. A lot of people who win these reality shows are making movies, doing stage shows, awarding functions. I think it only happened thanks to these reality shows.

Additionally, when asked if she would consider appearing on a reality TV show, the actress said, “Of course, if there’s something like ‘So you think you can dance’ in India, so I would really like to participate. What needs to change about dancing reality shows is that there are a lot of gimmicks and less dancing going on. People rely on acrobatics and sensational factors to win these reality shows. But dancing at the end of the day is about dancing. It’s not much about whether you can do an aerial act or whether you can do a flip or a jump or a lift. Good dancing has been diluted because of these reality shows. I think we need to correct. “

Sandeepa also shared his take on item numbers in movies. There has been a moral debate about this over the past few years. Sharing his thoughts on this, Sandeepa said, “I don’t like the term article numbers. I think that’s degrading because why call it item number. Who is the element in this? Is the woman the element in her? I’m not sure why they are called item numbers. I would just call it a special song or song. “

“I feel like I’ve always avoided doing these songs because most of these songs sexualize women too much and don’t show them in a more empowering light. It’s still very sexualized that I have a problem with. I did a song for Kaagaz, only because it didn’t sexualize the woman and the lyrics of the song were about the beauty of the man rather than about a woman and her body. To me, all of these things are very important. I want everything to be aesthetically correct. And as a woman, as a person who is out there and has a following, I also think it’s my responsibility to spread ideas of a strong woman and not just to be someone who is something you would like to sexualize. I have a problem with that, for sure, ”she added.
