Movie theaters in India were hit hard when the pandemic first hit the country in 2020. They were the first to shut down completely when there was a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in India. one year ago. Now that the country is experiencing a second wave of COVID-19 cases, things look grim for the theater trade across the country. Earlier this year, filmmakers and theater owners looked upbeat when there was a dip in business and the filmmakers even announced theatrical release of their projects. However, in view of the current situation, film releases have been postponed, again bringing up the question of the future of cinemas.

The T-series directed by Bhushan Kumar is one of the biggest production houses in the country, and in the next two years the label has 30-35 films to be released. While OTT has grown in importance over the past year due to the temporary absence of theaters, Bhushan Kumar believes theaters cannot be overlooked and need a boost from the filmmakers themselves. same. “We really need the support of the theaters. OTT is a really good platform which also gives you a really big reach. There are a few movies that we’ve made for direct OTT releases and have released a few movies on OTT and we’ll be releasing that in the future as well. But there are films that need to hit theaters, ”he said in an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama.

“This time, we decided not to think about ourselves. We won’t be like we’ve released 3-4 of our movies on OTT and made a reasonable profit that we otherwise earn in theaters and be done with. We found it (theatrical release) risky and therefore took this route. But if there are films that can have a theatrical release, then the risk-free OTT route should be avoided. But no one does this for a long time. ” he added.

“So I decided that we would think long term. As we could bear the loss of Rs. 10-20 crores for a great movie like Bombay Saga and for films like Saina we will bear a loss of Rs. 3-4 cr. Let me invest that 20-30 crore in bringing movies into theaters and picking up that kind of habit, ”said Bhushan Kumar explaining his long-term plan to make theaters work.
