Interview of Sophia Loren and Edoardo Ponti – Candidates – Deadline

Director and Co-Writer Edoardo Ponti brought his mom for my talk about her movie, Netflix The life to come, as part of the Deadline Contenders International Awards Season Event. This mom just happens to be a true screen legend, Sophia Loren, who was helmed by her son (their third collaboration) in his first major film lead role in several years.

Ponti and Loren had wanted to make this movie for quite some time, both fans of the original book.

“Since I was a teenager, I have loved Romain Gary’s novel; I rediscovered the story of friendship and love between Madame Rosa and Momo, 12 years old, two people who are separate – race, religion, culture – and yet they are people who are two sides of the same medal, ”says Ponti. “They were raised without a family and were defined by suffering, but above all by hope and resilience and that really touched me.

He adds that it was a special moment to make the film in Italian language with a true icon of Italian and world cinema.

“I love working with my mom who just happens to be an amazing actress. And what I love most of all is to present it in a way that I see it, ”says Ponti. “Being able to present her to the world through my eyes, giving people the most authentic full version of Sophia, not the Sophia, the icon who spells her name with a ‘ph’, but rather the Sofia, the mother, the woman, the actress, the artist who spells her name with an “f”. “

As for Loren, the role of Madame Rosa – a dying woman who takes care of the children of the women she once walked the streets of the Italian town of Bari with – it was irresistible to bring her back to the screen. “I thought it was something very close to my path with feelings and emotions,” she says. “That’s what really touched me about Madame Rosa. She was full of life but at the same time she had issues with the world and everything. She was always surrounded by very young children and she always seemed not to be that enthusiastic about them. But if she hadn’t had them around her, she would have died much sooner than she did.

Ponti says he can’t think of another star he’d rather direct. “In my life, if I could only work with one actress, I would work with my mother over and over again. Not only has she given me life, she has given me great work in my films, and it’s just a joy to work with someone I can not only call my mom but also my friend and professional partner. He said.

Loren, now in her eighth decade in the movies after starting out as an extra in the early 1950s, wouldn’t have done it any other way and says she’s still nervous and okay with it.

“I get nervous if I’m not nervous,” she laughs. “I love what I do. I love stories. I was born on a set, I was always on a set, so if I’m not on a set, I don’t know what to do.
