“It was a terrible day in the history of this country” – Deadline

Jimmy Kimmel called today’s attacks on the US Capitol as the “final betrayal” of the Donald Trump era and “a terrible day” in the country’s history.

Speaking from his home, where he films his ABC show due to the increase in Covid-19 numbers in Los Angeles, Kimmel said: “It was one of those days that I always assumed to be behind we. It wasn’t the kind of thing I ever imagined would happen in this country – in my lifetime. The President of the United States – because he is too angry, too insecure and too incompetent – to face the fact that he lost an election – a fair election – an election that was no different every other election – an election he lost by seven million votes – and 70 voters – turns a mob into anger – at members of Congress – and his own vice president. Not to mention the endangerment of the Capitol police. These blue lives that he claims are so important to him.

Kimmel, who had Regina King as a guest, also called out Senators Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz for their role in the “election masquerade.” “[They] started those fires to start a war, just to distract us from the fact that Donald Trump lost the election.

“These people are not Americans. There is no “we the people”, there is “me the people” and that is all, “he added. “The craziest part is these MAGA walkers think Donald Trump cares about them. He doesn’t care about you. He doesn’t care about your wife, your job, your healthcare, or the air you breathe, the water you drink. He cares about himself. And only on himself. Unless you were pushing a lawn mower, he wouldn’t let you into his golf club. He was driving his limo right above you to get a Chik-Fil-A sandwich.

It was not a completely solemn monologue; Kimmel pointed out that the crowd showed respect for the velvet dresses in the Capitol. “They, for some reason, have stuck in the velvet cords,” he said. “Maybe they should put them all over the building and they would stay outside.

He also pointed out a number of rioters dressed in costumes such as a viking. “It was as if a psychotic audience of Price is Right were forcibly taking control of the Plinko wheel,” he said.
