Joe Biden administration to restrict travel from India due to Covid-19 – Deadline

The United States will start restricting travel from India over fears of an increase in the number of cases and variants of Covid-19 in that country.

“On the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Administration will restrict travel from India now,” spokesman Jen Psaki said in a statement. “The policy will be implemented in light of the extraordinarily high number of COVID-19 cases and the multiple variants circulating in India.”

The policy will go into effect on Tuesday, the White House said.

On Thursday, Psaki said the United States was looking to provide oxygen supplies, including additional ventilators, as well as personal protective equipment and treatment courses for the antiviral drug remdesivir. The White House also announced that it will redirect its own order for manufacturing supplies from Astra Zeneca to India, which will allow the country to manufacture 20 million doses of the vaccine.

The outbreak of cases has put a strain on the Indian healthcare system, while its vaccine rollout has been slow.

Biden spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week, and the White House said that “the two leaders have decided that the United States and India will continue to stand side by side in the effort to protect our citizens and the health of our communities. “

More soon.
