EXCLUSIVE: John Boyega quit Netflix movie Rebel crest mid-shoot with “family reasons” cited by the streamer as the cause of the sudden departure.
Production is currently on hiatus but we understand that Netflix is working hard to find a replacement for the Star wars actor and someone is likely to be recruited in the next few days. Filming began May 3 in Louisiana.
A Netflix spokesperson told us, “Rebel crest temporarily stops as we seek to recast John Boyega who had to leave the project for family reasons. We remain committed to Jeremy Saulnier’s extraordinary film and look forward to the resumption of production. We look forward to continuing our partnership with John Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions, in addition to our upcoming film. They cloned Tyrone in which he also plays.
It’s an unusual turn. The main actors rarely leave the projects being filmed. We wish Boyega the best of luck with everything he has to do with.
Plot details have been kept under wraps about the Jeremy Saulnier-directed project, which is said to explore American systemic injustice against the backdrop of black action, suspense and humor. Filming was originally scheduled to start in April 2020 but has been postponed due to Covid.
We also find AnnaSophia Robb, Emory Cohen, Don Johnson, James Cromwell, James Badge Dale, Zsane Jhe and Al Vicente.
The producers are Anish Savjani, Neil Kopp, Vincent Savino and Saulnier with Macon Blair and Louise Lovegrove as executive producers. Saulnier is best known for genre films Blue ruin and Green room.
Netflix’s Boyega-starrer They cloned Tyrone is currently in post-production. Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris are also on the bill.
