Los Angeles officials expect county to go yellow next week – Deadline

For Los Angeles, this “bright light at the end of the tunnel” that the governor of California Gavin Newsom continues to quote takes on a yellow tint. As in, the yellow level – or the least restrictive – of the plan to reopen the state.

LA County has remained in the State Orange level for more than three weeks and has now met the criteria for the Yellow level for a week. If, as expected, Los Angeles County continues to meet the state’s yellow level criteria for one more week, the county will enter the yellow level by the middle of next week.

“We plan to step into the yellow tier mid-week,” Los Angeles director of public health Barbara Ferrer said Thursday. “We will issue an amended order from the health official on Wednesday that goes into effect on Thursday.”

The yellow level crossing increases capacity in many areas, including cinemas, concert halls and theme parks. All of these changes will require further security changes, including masking, distancing and infection control to reduce the risk of transmission.

Sectors where capacity limits are increasing include amusement parks and fairs, gymnasiums and fitness centers, yoga studios, private events, bars, hotels and short-term accommodation rentals, private gatherings, breweries, indoor playgrounds, restaurants, card rooms and outdoor live events and shows, wineries and tasting rooms, family entertainment centers and museums, zoos and aquariums.

If the county goes yellow, the state will post qualifying data on Tuesday, an amended order from the Los Angeles health official will be issued on Wednesday, and the order will take effect on Thursday, May 6. While counties can expand their reopens within 24 hours, Los Angeles is waiting an extra day to ease restrictions so businesses have time to adjust, according to Ferrer.

Newsom, for its part, confirmed on Thursday that the state as a whole would likely abandon the tiered system from its plan for a safer economy in May, a claim it has already made.

“Look, if we keep doing what we’ve been doing, there’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll be going beyond the master plan by June 15th,” he said.
