Los Angeles to resume use of Johnson & Johnson vaccine “very quickly” – Deadline

An advisory committee from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended on Friday that Covid-19 inoculations with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine be restarted.

The Immunization Practices Advisory Committee found that the benefits outweighed the risks, as a small group of recipients developed blood clots. There are now 15 confirmed cases. All cases were found in women. Thirteen of them were between 18 and 49 years old.

The committee recommended that the vaccine carry a warning about the rare risk of blood clots. Federal health officials are expected to make the final call shortly.

The news broke during a press briefing with Los Angeles County public health officials. The region’s scientific director, Dr Paul Simon, said LA County was “ready to pick up very quickly.”

Simon said the county is preparing and is in the final stages of developing educational materials to help people be made aware of the risks of J&J rewards.

“Some of the concerns – community concerns – about the J&J vaccine, we’ll have to address,” Simon said. “Intuitively I would have thought it would be a big setback, but we have data to indicate that it may not be.”

The single-dose drug J&J is said to be used in “places where we’re less sure people will show up for a second dose,” he said. “We are going to use these vaccines strategically.”

But Dr Simon said the county could not yet start using the vaccine again.

“We have to wait for the signing of the CDC and the FDA,” he said. “After that it will be 1-2 days. We don’t want to wait.

He estimated that LA County has about “13,000 doses of J&J in our network” at the moment. “There is a reserve here that we can use immediately, but we don’t really know what the deliveries will be. [going forward]. “

Pfizer and Moderna dose supplies are increasing, so J&J delays should not be a problem. “There are a lot of vaccines out there,” Dr Simon said.
