Marc Buhaj to direct unscripted series and specials for Disney-branded TV – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Marc Buhaj, most recently SVP, Programming, and General Manager, Disney XD, has been appointed VP, Unscripted and Specials Series, Disney Branded Television. He will oversee a non-fiction portfolio spanning documentaries and documentary series, unscripted formats, variety and specials for Disney +, as well as unscripted series and specials for Disney Channels. Buhaj will report to Ayo Davis, Executive Vice President, Creative Development and Strategy, Disney Branded Television.

Buhaj, a 14-year Disney veteran, fills the void left by the departure of Dan Silver, Disney + vice president of Nonfiction Originals, who left in December for a job at Netflix. The position, which will now be held by Buhaj, was expanded during the November restructuring. As part of this realignment, management of Disney XD has been transferred to Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution. The new date keeps Buhaj on the content creation side of the business.

20th Television’s Reena Singh Joins Disney Branded Television as SVP Development & Current Series

This is the second key programming executive hiring for Davis since taking the helm of founding Disney Branded Television, following the appointment of Reena Singh, 20th Television’s current vice president of programming, to the Vice President of Development and Current Series position.

“Marc will align our great strengths to support our great opportunities – he’s an intuitive leader and strategic thinker with a deep appreciation for creative storytelling, and he’s now gaining a very effective team with complementary strengths,” Davis said. “His knowledge of the most effective ways to mirror and extend our core brands makes him ideal for propelling their work and meeting the needs of our viewers who want quality, innovative and engaging programming wherever they watch our content.”

Reports to Buhaj for the development of consumer content for Disney + are Nicole Silveira, Director, Unscripted Formats; Marjon Javadi, director, documentaries and Docu series; Meghan de Boer, Director, Varieties and Specials; and Jordan Gilbert, Director, Short-Form. He will also expand unscripted development efforts for children and families to provide more original content on Disney channels and, in that capacity, Claire McCabe, Vice President, Alternative Programming, will also report to him.

“I am thrilled with the opportunity to work with this talented team to realize the full potential of unscripted storytelling for Disney + and Disney Channels,” said Buhaj. “The development slate runs deep, and we will continue to actively innovate and evolve the genre. Disney + is home to the most ambitious unscripted content with family, community and optimism at heart. We look forward to partnering with amazing storytellers from around the world to inspire and delight new viewers, as well as fans of our premium brands. “

In his recent role as Senior Vice President of Programming and General Manager of Disney XD, Buhaj was immersed in unscripted electronic game content for Disney XD in conjunction with ESPN. He previously directed international original series and co-productions for Disney Television Animation. He also served as Vice President, Original Programming, Disney Channels, Europe, Middle East & Africa, overseeing Disney’s London production center. He joined Disney in 2007 as SVP, Programming, Jetix Europe, after serving as VP, Programming and Planning for Cartoon Network and Boomerang in the United States, and as Executive Director, Programming and Acquisitions, for Turner Entertainment Networks in Asia. Earlier in his career he worked for the Seven Network in his native Australia.
