Nancy Pelosi wins vote to serve another term as Speaker of the House – Deadline

Nancy Pelosi was elected to another term as House Speaker, in an ever-tight vote that reflected the narrower Democrat majority in the next Congress.

Pelosi was elected 216-208 and will serve as speaker for her fourth term. Pelosi won the support of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others on the party’s left flank. Two Democrats voted for other candidates: Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) voted for Hakeem Jeffries, the Democrat of New York, and Jared Golden (D-MD) voted for Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL ). The representatives Abigail Spanberger (D-VA), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) voted present.

Minority House Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) received 209 votes.

The Covid-19 crisis has eclipsed the debates. Members of the House are required to wear masks while on the floor of the House, even when giving speeches. New members were allowed to invite a single guest to their swearing-in ceremony, which in years past has filled galleries. Two years ago, when Pelosi returned to the presidency, celebrities such as Tony Bennett and James Gunn stepped forward as his guests.

Congressman-elect Luke Letlow dies of complications from Covid-19; Lawmakers pay homage

Sunday’s subdued procedure were a bit lively when one of the new members, Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, wore a mask and was told to put one on. An elected congressman, Luke Letlow, died last week of complications from Covid-19. Two members of the House recently tested positive and have been in quarantine, according to GovTrack. A plexiglass enclosure was installed on the floor so that members potentially exposed to the virus could vote.

Jeffries, who is chair of the Democratic House caucus, appointed Pelosi as chair, calling for a “resilient leader” who has guided the House during the coronavirus pandemic.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), chair of the Republican House caucus, nominated McCarthy. She noted that the new Congress “now has more women than ever in our history,” and awarded her the Republican gains in the recent election.

Pelosi returned to the presidency in 2019, having served from 2007 to 2011. In the new Congress, Democrats will have 222 seats and Republicans 211. There are two vacant seats.
