North Carolina teacher files lawsuit against Netflix’s ‘outside banks’ – Deadline

A high school English teacher and creative writing teacher in North Carolina has filed a lawsuit against Netflix. Outer Banks claiming copyright infringement.

North Carolina professor named Kevin Wooten accuses Outer Banks creators Jonas Pate and Joshua Pate to steal the plot of his 2016 young adult novel, Pennywise: Blackbeard’s Treasure Hunt!.

Both located on the outer shores of North Carolina, Pennywise and Outer Banks, follow a group of teenagers who find themselves in possession of a treasure map and set off in search of hidden riches. According to the lawsuit, the novel and the series feature a wealthy villain who also seeks treasure.

Additionally, Wooten’s trial accuses the show’s creators of copying the set, character, and plot of his original novel. He also claims to have sold a number of his copies in Wilmington, where one of the Pate brothers lives.

The North Carolina instructor is seeking legal damages, punitive actions, royalties and a line of credit in the series, the lawsuit says.

Netflix did not respond to a request for comment on the complaint.
