Parvathy Thiruvothu’s next film Varthamanam was refused screening permission by the Kerala regional office of the Censor Board of Film Certification. Writer Aryadan Shoukath said he received a letter from the censorship committee without specifying the reasons.

While the censorship committee did not elaborate on the reason for the denial of permission, a BJP leader and lawyer V Sandeep Kumar, who is also a member of the censorship committee, tweeted that the film criticizes right-wing politics.

In the now deleted tweet, Sandeep Kumar wrote that the theme of the film was anti-national. “I saw the film Varthamanam as a member of the censorship committee. The topic was the persecution of Dalits and Muslims in the JNU turmoil. I opposed it. Because Aryadan Shoukath was the screenwriter and producer of the film. Of course, the theme of the film was anti-national, ”he wrote in his tweet.

Meanwhile, film writer Aryadan Shoukath is a Congressional politician, screenwriter and producer of the film. Reacting to BJP chief Sandeep’s tweet, he wrote: “How anti-national is it when you talk about the student protests at a Delhi campus, the struggle for democracy in India? Sandeep’s tweet. “

He added: “We still live in a country which is a democratic, secular and socialist republic. Do we verify the clan and the race of the screenwriter before allowing its projection? We cannot accept the emergency. not declared in the cultural domain. “

The film has now been sent to the review committee. According to some reports, the censorship committee suggested some cuts.
