Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney Complete Welsh Soccer Club Buyout – Deadline

Hollywood has officially arrived in the small market town of Wales – 65,000 residents – with dead Pool star Ryan Reynolds and It’s always sunny in Philadelphia Actor Rob McElhenney ends his takeover of local Wrexham football club.

The deal was officially approved by the UK Financial Conduct Authority last week, concluding one of the most bizarre stories of the past year. Foreign investment in the UK film and television industries from America is one thing – it sounds like something straight out of an episode of It’s always sunny (‘Gang buys Welsh football team’).

This begs the question as to why the duo set their sights on a provincial sports team competing in the fifth tier of English soccer? Throughout the process, the duo insisted that this was an investment in a company in which they saw the potential for growth and success. Earlier comments from Wrexham manager Spencer Harris reiterated that: “They are really interested in taking something with real potential, that this club has, investing, shaping it and watching it grow.

Other theories exist. It seems notable that Wrexham’s recent announcements have gone hand in hand with marketing for Aviation Gin, in which Reynolds has an interest (it was bought by Diageo in 2020). Coinciding with today’s announcement, the brand revealed that Wrexham FC has signed Aviation as an official partner and is launching a “Limited Edition Aviation Gin Design” to celebrate the takeover, according to the beverage business The Spirits Business. Aviation has grown aggressively in overseas markets, particularly in the UK, where it recently obtained a nationwide listing with the Sainsbury’s supermarket chain. The deal with Wrexham has certainly generated improved marketing for the brand.

Whatever their reasons, Reynolds and McElhenney certainly had fun during this process. In response to news of the completion, the couple both added the letter ‘W’ to their names on Twitter, as a tribute to Wrexham, passing by Wrob and Wryan respectively.

They posted jokes on the social media platform, toasting the deal (with an aviation bottle, of course):

Reynolds followed up on this post with a photo of himself in a Wrexham training hoodie, saying he couldn’t get to the racetrack, where the team play, fast enough (international travel restrictions might make this difficult for now).

Wrexham won at Altrincham last night, perhaps bodes well for the takeover. The team are now in seventh place in the standings and will consider a push for promotion fueled by the injection of new money.
