Simu Liu Expresses Further “Disappointment” With Cancellation Of “Kim’s Convenience” – Deadline

Simu Liu shared his thoughts on the abrupt final season of popular Korean-Canadian family sitcom Kim’s convenience.

When the final season hit Netflix on Wednesday, the Shang-Chi star wrote a lengthy Facebook post in which he details his feelings, opinions and frustrations with the showrunner and producer decisions to end the series. Liu, who had previously expressed his disappointment at the incomplete plots of his character, Jung; said he was frustrated with the lack of input he and his fellow co-stars had on the show.

“I always understood that the main actors were the stewards of the character and that they would become more creative as the series went on,” he wrote. “That wasn’t the case on our show, which was doubly confusing because our producers were predominantly white and we were a cast of Asian Canadians who had a plethora of lived experiences to draw from and offer writers. But we were often told about the plans for the next seasons just a few days before the start of filming… we were deliberately not given much leeway. Imagine my disappointment year after year knowing that Jung was just stuck at Handy and was absolutely in no rush to improve in any way.

Liu continued, “More importantly, the characters never seemed to grow up. I can understand that the show is still a success and is loved by many people… but I remain obsessed with the missed opportunities to show Asian characters with real meaning. depth and the ability to grow and evolve.

In his role, he also co-created showrunner Ins Choi to not do “enough to be a champion” for various TV talent. Liu said that by leaving the show, Choi did not leave a protege, a “padawan learner” or other Korean showrunner who could have filled his shoes. The actor wrote that he and others reached out to Choi for commentary and mentorship, with the aim of getting more involved in the writing, believing that “people would naturally be inclined to help.”

“Boy, I was wrong here,” he wrote. “I was not the only one who tried. Many of us in the cast were writers trained with thoughts and ideas that only got finer over time. But these doors have never been opened to us in any meaningful way. “

Choi representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Just two weeks later Kim’s convenience producers announced the final season, CBC unveiled a Kim’s derivative series with Nichole Power.

“It was difficult for me. I love and am proud of Nicole, and I want the show to be successful for her… but I remain resentful of all the circumstances that led to the only non-Asian character having his own show, ”he said.

Power, whose Shannon Ross shared a relationship with Jung de Liu, was one of the few non-Asian actors in the original series. Although Ross and Jung have shared a close friendship, Liu said he “will categorically refuse to reprise my role in any capacity.”
