Sinéad O’Connor Now Says She’s Not Retiring From Music Biz – Deadline

UPDATE: The media announced Sinéad O’Connor’s retirement last week, she said in a Twitter update proclaiming her return.

Mercurial O’Connor said her retirement announcement was a “knee-jerk reaction” to British and Canadian media reports. Those “lipstick pigs” set it off, she wrote.

“All interviewers were asked to be sensitive and not ask about child abuse or dig deep into painful mental health shit which would be traumatic for me to have to think about it. Every time I’m going to sell a record for 30 years, it’s “aren’t you crazy? aren’t you an asshole are you not invalid? ‘ She wrote.

“I said I was retiring. As I have said many times before in gut reactions when I was young and experienced media abuse on the grounds that I am legally vulnerable. The biggest misconception (I am always asked this but I never answer) of ‘Sinead O’Connor’ is that she is Amazonian. I’m not. I’m a five-foot-four-inch tender-hearted woman who is actually very fragile, ”she added.

“But I love my job. Make music that is. I don’t like the consequences of being a talented (and outspoken) woman being that I have to walk through walls of prejudice every day to make a living, ”continued O’Connor. “But I was born for the performing arts and with the amazing love and support I have received over the past few days and will continue to receive from Rob Prinz and everyone at ICM, as well as many managers, buyers and fans. I feel secure in retracting my expressed wish to retire.

EARLIER: Sinéad O’Connor bids farewell to all of this, declaring that she is retiring from music and touring, and that her next album will be her last. O’Connor made the announcements in a series of tweets posted on Friday.

“This is to announce my retirement from touring and my work in the recording industry. I have grown old and tired,” she wrote.

Irish singer-songwriter’s next album, No veteran dies alone, will be her last outing, she said.

“This is not sad news. This is incredibly beautiful news. A warrior knows when to retreat. It’s a forty-year journey. It’s time to put your feet up and make other dreams come true.

O’Connor’s iconic career will be remembered for several things. His head shaved close-up in the “Nothing Compares 2 U” video and ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II after a Saturday Night Live performances are two visual milestones.

She will also be marked for her first two albums, The Lion and the Cobra and I don’t want what I don’t have were two of the landmarks of the late 1980s music scene and marked it as a cultural force.

Of course, declaring that you are retiring from the music business is itself a centuries-old tradition. Elton John, Cher and many others have been hosting farewell tours for many years.
