‘Special’ star designer Ryan O’Connell signs with CAA – Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Ryan O’Connell, Writers Guild Award winner and Primetime Emmy nominee, has signed with CAA for representation in all fields.

O’Connell is best known as the creator, writer, executive producer, and star of the Netflix short series, Special. Debuting on the streaming service in April 2019, the comedy is loosely based on O’Connell’s education and experience as a gay man navigating the world with cerebral palsy. Earning four Emmy nominations for its first season, Special also won the O’Connell GLAAD Special Recognition Award and a visibility award from the LGBTQ rights group, the Human Rights Campaign.

Set to return in May for its highly anticipated second and final season, the show is produced by Jim Parsons and his banner That’s Wonderful Productions. So far, O’Connell and That’s Wonderful have also teamed up on Accessible, a half-hour series in development at HBO Max, set at a boarding school for teens with disabilities.

Previously a member of the editorial staff of NBC Will and Grace rebirth, MTV Clumsy.and the T from Netflixthe Baby-Sitters Club, O’Connell is also the author of two books, including I’m special: and other lies we tell each other. Described as “part-memory, part-manifest”, I am special was published by Simon & Schuster in 2015 to critical acclaim. O’Connell’s next debut novel, titled Just looking at it, will be released in spring 2022 at Simon & Schuster, Atria. An adaptation of the latter title, from FilmNation Entertainment and Berlanti Productions, is also planned, with O’Connell set to write and star.

Outside of television, O’Connell has also served as the editor of Thought Catalog and contributed to many other publications including Vice and Buzzfeed.
