Star Wars Day – did you know Harrison Ford wasn’t the first, second, or even third choice for Hans Solo?

Today, May 4, 2021, is the day that fans of the sci-fi universe celebrate Star Wars Day across the world. This time it will be a digital celebration through sharing content, selling merchandise and more. So, on Star Wars day, here’s a little anecdote for all Star Wars fans and Harrison Ford fans in particular. Did you know that Harrison Ford was not the first choice for the role of Hans Solo? Uh-huh, you read that right. There was a list of suitors in George Lucas’ mind before finalizing Harrison Ford as Hans. George Lucas had approached Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Jack Nicholson, Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Robert Englund, Nick Nolte, Burt Reynolds, Chevy Chase and Perry King for the role of Hans Solo earlier. However, none of the aforementioned names were passionate about the role or the movie. At the time, a genre of sci-fi was not that popular and therefore, celebrities would stay away from such movies or characters. So how did Ford land the role of Hans Solo? Well, apparently Harrison Ford worked in another production department for the film. They say he was in the design department. As it turns out, having had a bad experience with a few of his previous films, the actor wasn’t too keen on returning to acting. He was happy to design the props for the film and to work as a carpenter. However, when someone suggested he give it a try at the audition, he did and well, as you know, the rest is history. And now people can’t imagine anyone other than Harrison Ford playing Hans. He surely made the character immortal.
