Stay Gold Features, Topic Studios crew on ‘Nanny’ by Nikyatu Jusu – Deadline

Stay Gold Features and Topic Studios have teamed up to finance and produce Nanny, a horror film written and directed by Sierra Leonean-American filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu, during her directorial debut. Nikkia Moulterie (Random acts of theft) and Daniela Taplin Lundberg from Stay Gold (Harriet, Honey boy) are producing the project, which will begin filming in June in New York.

The script landed on the 2020 blacklist and was also shortlisted for the 2019 Sundance Institute Creative Producing Lab & Summit, Sundance’s 2020 Writer’s Lab, and 2020 Director’s Lab. Nanny, which is also funded by LinLay, follows Aisha, an undocumented nanny caring for a privileged child on New York’s Upper East Side. As she prepares for the arrival of the son she left in West Africa, a violent supernatural presence invades her reality, threatening the American dream that she has painstakingly reconstructed.

According to Jusu, “Somali-British poet Warsan Shire says, ‘No one leaves the house unless the house is the mouth of a shark. Nanny is my attempt to make sense of the displacement, of the nostalgia that immigrant women carry as they inexorably forge new lives in America. Our mothers sacrificed so much that we could essentially create ourselves, and while the real horror of this sacrifice manifests itself in the form of the living, breathing monsters in Nanny, my goal is for audiences to leave our film with a feeling of hope. Women like my protagonist Aisha, my mom, and maybe your moms, refused to succumb to a company that never intended for their success, but instead empowered themselves with a survival story that equipped them. to flourish, to fly, to survive.

The executive producers are Maria Zuckerman, Ryan Heller and Michael Bloom for Topic Studios (Mauritanian, Leaves no trace), Rebecca Cammarata (Harriet, Honey boy) by Stay Gold, Sumalee Montano (It’s us) and Grace Lay from LinLay as well as Jusu.

Short film by Jusu Suicide by sunlight, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019. Covered by CAA, M88 and Granderson Des Rochers, she also directed an episode for the CW anthology horror series Two-sentence horror stories.
