As the country still tried to cope with the new conditions of the pandemic still raging last year, the film industry lost Irrfan Khan to a colon infection caused by complications from his neuroendocrine tumor. The actor was 54 when he took his last breath and today marks his first death anniversary. Sutapa Sikdar says losing Irrfan taught him to be more alert and independent.

As her heart cries for their sons, she says it’s hard to see Babil and Ayaan miss their father. Sutapa lost his father at 45 while Babil and Ayaan must have lost theirs at 22 and 17 respectively. Sutapa added that his house still contains the essence of Irrfan and those who visit their house do not feel that he is no more. Irrfan insisted on reflecting on every action and this helped Sutapa cope with his loss. She keeps reminding herself not to let small things worry her because while Irrfan can fight a life-threatening illness, she can handle things too.

Speaking about her sons, she said that Ayaan is an introvert and is completely opposed to Babil, so she needs to be more careful with the way she plays him. She says she can’t be vulnerable in front of Ayaan because he needs her more than she needs him. As Babil plans to follow in Irrfan Khan’s footsteps, she says that if he consecrates himself as Irrfan, she can see a bright future for him. Sutapa Sikdar has said that she has become emotionally closer to her sons after Irrfan’s disappearance, as the emotions of losing a partner and a father cannot overlap.
