Tribeca to kick off with indoor and outdoor premiere of ‘In The Heights’ – Deadline

The 20th edition of the Tribeca Film Festival, taking advantage of its timing as the city and cinema emerge from the pandemic, will open on June 9 with the world premiere of In the heights.

The Warner Bros. adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning musical, directed by Jon Chu, will be screened simultaneously outdoors at various venues and indoors at United Palace. The restored 1930 theater is located in the Upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights, the setting for the film and also Miranda’s longtime base.

There will also be open-air screenings on opening night in New York City’s five boroughs, a first for Tribeca, though the festival has long explored many parts of the city. In 2019, the festival opened with a documentary on Harlem’s Apollo Theater held at the Apollo itself. After postponing its usual start from April to June, the festival will be the first major event in North America since the start of Covid-19 to have in-person screenings, although smaller regional events have returned to form.

Just two days after launching Tribeca, In the heights will premiere in the US as it begins streaming on HBO Max as well. Each of the 2021 Warner Bros. movies that are valid day and date will remain on HBO Max for 31 days.

New York theaters began reopening the first week of March with a 25% capacity limit imposed by state officials. While commercial exhibitors are hoping the limit will be increased soon, even 25% should be achievable at United Palace, which can accommodate more than 3,000 seats.

“It is such an honor to open the 20th anniversary of the Tribeca Film Festival with In the heights”Miranda said in the official announcement. “We are delighted to welcome them to the upscale neighborhoods! It will be an unforgettable night at United Palace. We can’t wait to share this musical love letter to our community, with our community, in our community.

The choice of location was natural for a multitude of reasons. Warner Bros. and The Miranda Family Fund both supported a series of screenings of the studio’s classics at United Palace, which was originally one of Loew’s five “Wonder Theaters” in the New York area.

Tribeca will soon announce the full roster for its 20th edition, which runs June 9-20. The festival is the culmination of NY PopsUp, the statewide revitalization initiative to bring entertainment and the arts back to the community.

In the heights is the quintessential New York story of hard work, resilience and triumph, ”said Jane Rosenthal, festival co-founder and CEO of its parent company, Tribeca Enterprises. “We are proud to present this film as an opening night where it can make its hometown debut to celebrate its New York roots and the Latinx community.”

Paula Weinstein, director of content for Tribeca Enterprises, called the opening night a “gift to communities across New York City.”

Quiara Alegría Hudes adapted the script for In the heights, with original songs and lyrics by Miranda. The cast includes Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, Olga Merediz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Gregory Diaz IV, Stephanie Beatriz, Dascha Polanco and Jimmy Smits. Miranda, Hudes, Scott Sanders, Anthony Bregman and Mara Jacobs produce.

Plans are still being finalized for the Tribeca line in motion pictures, video games, virtual reality, podcasts and other verticals. For its film program, the festival said it will host outdoor screenings throughout its 12 days at multiple venues. Specially equipped 40-foot screens are used, which organizers say are the country’s first mobile HD screens.

“We are delighted to partner with Tribeca for a city-wide takeover In the heights“Chu said. “New York, and in particular Washington Heights, is the main character in our film – its vibrancy and energy is unmatched. It’s amazing that after a year of isolation, New Yorkers in every borough have the opportunity to see him first, together, and join us in celebrating the return of life.
