ABC World News Tonight with David Muir Closes the year once again as the most-watched network’s evening newscast, but it comes after all mainstream shows have seen a rise amid the coronavirus crisis.
World News Tonight an average of 9.61 million viewers for the year, against 8.29 million for NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and 5.92 million for CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell. The figures come from Nielsen, via ABC and NBC.
In demo 25-54, News from the world tonight averaged 1.93 million, for NBC Nightly News with 1.76 million and CBS Evening News with 1.11 million. In demo 18-49, News from the world tonight was 1.31 million, at 1.22 for NBC Nightly News and 792,000 for CBS Evening News.
As the coronavirus crisis worsened, all evening news broadcasts saw a rise in ratings, often exceeding their prime-time queues. World News Tonight was the best ratings in all broadcast and cable in 23 out of 26 weeks, March through August. The network said it won all three audience categories – total viewers, 25-54 viewers and 18-49 viewers – for the first time in 24 years.
The average total audience for News from the world tonight increased by 12% compared to 2019. NBC Nightly News increased by 6% and CBS Evening News increased by 4%. NBC News said Nightly News numbers were the highest in four years.
