‘Bachelor’ host Chris Harrison to step down for unspecified period – Deadline

UPDATE: Chris Harrison will be “stepping down” from his role as host of The single person for an indefinite period, he said in a statement today. It will not appear on the After the final rose live special after the show’s season finale.

“The historic season of The Bachelor must not be marred or overshadowed by my mistakes or diminished by my actions. To this end, I consulted Warner Bros. and ABC and I will be retiring for a while and not joining the After the Final Rose special, ”Harrison wrote. “I am determined to be educated on a deeper and more productive level than ever before.”

EARLIER: The single person host Chris Harrison apologized for the comments he made during a recent interview with former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay, on Additional.

Discovery + sets date with five seasons of ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘The Bachelorette’

“To my Bachelor Nation family – I’ll always own a mistake when I make one, so I’m here to offer a sincere apology,” Harrison said in a tweet Wednesday night. “I have this incredible platform to talk about love, and yesterday I took a stand on topics on which I should have been better informed. While I do not speak for Rachael Kirkconnell, my intentions were simply to ask for mercy by offering her the opportunity to speak on her own behalf. What I realize now is causing harm by speaking badly in a way that perpetuates racism and for that I am deeply sorry.

In the interview, Harrison and Lindsay discussed the photos that recently emerged of Rachael Kirkconnell, this season’s current favorite. The single person. The photos, for which Kirkconnell has come under scrutiny, showed the 24-year-old attending a formal pre-war plantation-themed fraternity in 2018. The photos sparked a backlash on social media, because of the painful and racist history of the South before the Civil War.

Harrison defended Kirkconnell’s reputation, saying the photos were taken a long time ago and he also spoke out against the cancellation culture.

“I didn’t tell Rachael about it,” Harrison told Lindsay. “We all need a little grace, a little understanding, a little compassion. Because I’ve seen stuff online – this judge, jury, executioner thing where people tear this girl’s life apart and, like her parents, plunge her parents’ vote. It’s incredibly alarming to watch this. I haven’t heard Rachael talk about this yet. Until I actually hear this woman get a chance to speak, who am I to say anything? I saw a picture of her at a sorority party five years ago and that’s it.

Lindsay continued to pressure Harrison.

“Well, the photo was from 2018 at a former South / Antebellum party, so that’s not a good look,” Lindsay replied.

Harrison argued he “isn’t standing up for it” but said people aren’t watching the party “under the same lens” now.

“It’s never a good look,” Lindsay said, before focusing on the slavery component when it comes to being black. “It celebrates the old South. If I went to this party, what would I represent? “
