A proposal, a tearful goodbye – Deadline

SPOIL ALERT: The story includes details of the Season 4 finale of The good doctor.

The conclusion of The good doctorThe two-part Season 4 finale marked the final episode as a series regular for star Antonia Thomas leaving the ABC medical drama. In addition to bidding farewell to her character, Dr. Claire Browne, the final in Guatemala featured major developments for all of the other San Jose St. Bonaventure doctors on the trip as well as good news for Miguel, the patient with an adorable “ugly” dog and no family who was taken off the list of 12 screened for life-saving operations after developing a last minute health complication.

Foreshadowing what was to come for Claire, Dr Karla Saravia (Allegra Fulton), chief of the surgical department at the local hospital who had been paired with her in the operating room, told her at the start of the episode that there is three types of foreign doctors who come to Guatemala, those who care too much, those who care too little and those who learn to distance themselves from their jobs. While Claire said that she was hoping to be in the third group, Karla told her, “You are in your own group. You care so deeply, but it only gives you more strength.

“The Good Doctor”: Osvaldo Benavides Joins ABC Medical Drama As Series Regular For Season 5

Lea was excited and on her way to Hershey, but the woman with a newborn in the hospital, whose image sparked a new wave of grief for Lea in Part 1, asked her to help her with the baby. who had breathing problems. Lea, with Shaun’s help, looked after the little girl who, after a few scary moments, was fine.

Shaun made a video call to Glassman admitting he was “not doing well at all.” “Lea is sad and I don’t know how to make her less sad,” Shaun said.

Glassman, who is going through serious marital problems, did not give advice. “I’ve always loved that you asked me for advice and I always will, but I’ve noticed for a while that you need me less and less,” Glassman said. “It made me think… you can do anything, you’re good at it, better than you think.”

Most physicians have faced unforeseen obstacles during their surgeries.

Shaun was in the middle of a risky operation when the power suddenly went out, and he had to rely entirely on his feelings.

Marcus Andrews was in dire need of titanium mini-plates after having to replace more bone than expected for the young boy with a facial embolism. Nurse Ana Morales suggested going to a dentist for the rich. The dentist had the plaques but raised the price. Andrews ended up giving the guy his wedding ring as payment. He admitted to Ana that he had flirted with her in the midst of marital issues, and she told him that he would make her marriage work.

Claire’s patient, a mother suffering from gallstones, was found to have gallbladder cancer. Removing the tumor would take three times the time allotted for surgery. She asked Dr Audrey Lim and Dr Andrews to intervene, but none were able to help her without putting her own patients at risk. Despite Claire’s inexperience – she had never performed such a complex operation – “we should let her go on,” Lim said, noting that the woman would die without the operation anyway. “Claire gives him a chance to fight.”

Later, Claire’s patient started to bleed. She ran to Shaun for a consultation. There were two possible sources for the bleeding, and if she was wrong, the woman could die. Shaun noted that one of the options was statistically more likely, but Claire believed it was the other.

“None of us know for sure, but you’re good at it, better than you think,” Saun told him, channeling Glassman. She went with her instincts and was right. The woman was saved.

The relationship between Dr Lim and Dr Mateo Rendón Osma (Osvaldo Benavides) deepened as they too had to overcome difficulties during their operation. They shared some very personal things – she revealed she was suffering from PTSD, he told her he had a pending warrant in the United States resulting from a potty arrest during her residency which “became physical ”.

As he accompanied her on the bus to the airport, Mateo told Lim that he was considering hiring a lawyer to sort out his legal issue so he could come visit her in San José.

With Benavides joining the cast of The good doctor as a series regular next season, it’s safe to assume he would follow through on his plan.

On the same bus ride to the airport. Karla suggested that Claire stay as a surgeon at the clinic. Lim told Claire he should take the job.

Claire wasn’t sure. “I can’t speak the language, I don’t know anyone here, I just started a relationship with my dad. I’m not ready, ”she said, to which Lim responded,“ All legitimate concerns but what I haven’t heard is one reason you don’t want to do this. . You spent so many years thinking that your heart was a handicap, it made you worry too much, it hurt too much. But maybe here too much worrying is just what is needed.

Morgan’s patient, a young man with a hernia, returned after ignoring postoperative instructions to rest and instead returned to work to support his siblings. She integrated it but faced a complication. Alex came in and finished the operation for her.

“You inspire me and piss me off, a small price to pay,” he told Morgan distraught after the operation. On the bus to the airport, she told him she wanted a friend and wished him and Heather the best. He told her he broke up with Heather the night before and the two admitted they had feelings for each other.

At the airport, Claire said goodbye to her colleagues.

“You were way too good for us anyway,” Andrews said. “I am proud of you Dr Browne.”

She went to see Shaun last.

“I’m sad that people need to move on,” he told her. “I hope you move on.”

“I think I’m Shaun,” Claire replied.

Shaun noted that he had never kissed her, and she kissed him for the first time.

After Claire left, Lea told Shaun that she wasn’t going to Hershey and that she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. She asked him to marry her and he said yes. (or “Of course I love you,” to be exact.)

Shaun then shouted, “We’re getting married” and, as he had done with every major development in his life over the past four years, he immediately added, “I have to tell Claire.”

The finale had another heartwarming ending in store as Claire, joined by Karla, kicked off her first surgery as a doctor at the hospital. The patient was none other than Miguel, who was last seen walking away from the clinic with his small dog in his toes, presumably destined to die, as Shaun waved him over. Miguel would now also be saved as his trusty dog sat patiently outside waiting for his human.
