Legendary French designer was 98 years old – Deadline

Visionary fashion designer Pierre Cardin has passed away at the age of 98. After a career that lasted more than 70 years and which began with the creation of costumes on the 1946 of Jean Cocteau The beauty and the Beast, the French of Italian origin and naturalized died Monday at the American hospital near Paris.

Cardin was a savvy businessman who became the first fashion designer to mass produce high fashion while licensing his brand and owning Maxim’s restaurant chain with his own fashion house.

Born to French parents on July 2, 1922 near Venice, Italy, Cardin moved to France at the age of two. He first worked as an accountant, then worked without credit on The beauty and the Beast before doing an apprenticeship at Christian Dior. He opened his own fashion house in 1950 and presented his first collection in 1953.

Cardin’s fashions dressed dozens of iconic characters, including Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, Jeanne Moreau, Jackie Kennedy, Charlotte Rampling, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Her 1964 Space Age collection remains a milestone in fashion history with cutout dresses, knitted jumpsuits, skin-tight leather pants, fitted helmets and batwing sweaters. One of her most memorable designs, a pink dress featuring molded 3D shapes and crafted from her Cardine fabric, was worn by actress Lauren Bacall in 1968.

He was the first designer to venture deep into merchandising, with his fragrances and accessories that were distributed to more than 100 locations around the world, according to French reports.

Cardin recently appeared in the 2019 documentary Cardin’s house, directed by P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

In 1987, Cardin was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. In 1991, France appointed him Officer of the Legion of Honor, and he was also appointed Goodwill Ambassador by UNESCO.
