Chadwick Boseman NFT Sparks Controversy After Dead Actor’s Oscar Loss – Deadline

An NFT created by the late Chadwick Boseman for the 93rd Academy Awards is being redesigned after it sparked backlash online.

Andre Oshea, one of the artists hired to produce the non-fungible token, took to Instagram on Monday to announce the redesign and apologize “for any upheaval caused.”

“I now recognize that Chadwick’s face is a triggering reminder of his death,” he wrote, “rather than his life.”

Gaining momentum in recent months, NFTs are one-of-a-kind digital works of art that are traded through a blockchain. While an NFT could be one of many things including a JPEG, GIF, or MP3, Oshea was a gold sculpture of Boseman’s head modeled in 3D, out of his appearance in the Disney smash- Marvel. Black Panther.

Apparently, the NFT Boseman were handed out in Oscar gift bags, although they weren’t commissioned by the Academy. The plan was to auction off an additional copy of the NFT, with 50% of the proceeds going to the Colon Cancer Foundation. (Boseman died of the disease in August at the age of 43).

“I wanted to create a digital monument that embodies Chadwick’s influence as a hero for all black children around the world,” Oshea said, “while raising awareness about colon cancer and its impact on black communities.”

Oshea first ad the NFT auction on Saturday, and even then social media questioned that decision. “Idk what’s worse is that it’s an Nft, the fact that Chadwick Boseman’s death is commodified, or that it’s in every Oscar nominee’s gift bags.” tweeted a Twitter user.

After Boseman, who was in contention for Best Actor on Sunday, lost (in a surprise turn of events) to The father star Anthony Hopkins, the NFT felt all the more a slap in the face, both to the star and to those who admired him.

Tuesday, however, the redesigned room will be auctioned through the NFT Marketplace known as Rareable, where it is expected to gross over $ 1 million. As promised, half of the proceeds will go to the Colon Cancer Foundation in honor of Boseman.

Oshea’s full statement on the controversy can be viewed below.
