‘Wolfwalkers’ directors mark animated feature Oscar Nom – Deadline

In Ireland today, Wolf walkers Directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart celebrate Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

By putting distributor Apple TV + in this race for the first time, the name is a first for longtime Moore collaborator Stewart. Moore, meanwhile, has just achieved a hat trick, having won Oscar nominations for every film in his “ Irish Folk Trilogy, ” which includes his previous two, Song of the sea and The secret of Kells.

For Moore and Stewart, the news of the appointment was a relief. “You don’t want to break the streak. I think everyone gave 110%, the whole crew that we worked with – our “wolf pack,” as we call them, ”Moore said. “So I’m so happy that all of their hard work has been recognized.”

“It’s a bit surreal,” added Stewart. “We were just praying for good news, and we got it.

For both directors, it’s always great to see a small European studio like WolfwalkerCartoon Saloon be recognized, alongside American mainstays like Pixar. It’s also gratifying to see Hollywood continue to embrace its distinctive work in hand-drawn animation. “It’s amazing. We’re a small studio in a small town in central Ireland, and to be recognized by our peers in the main hub of the industry is always very humbling,” Moore said. “It is. surreal and amazing, and you kind of forget it’s crazy. It’s so unusual that it could have happened.

Widely embraced throughout awards season, the Cartoon Saloon and Melusine Productions co-production received numerous accolades ahead of today’s announcement. Recently, the film established itself as a leader at the Annie Awards, with 10 nominations, matching those won by Disney / Pixar. Soul. The first animated film to win the AFI Fest Audience Award, Wolf walkers has also won nominations for Best Animated Feature from industry groups such as BAFTA, Producers Guild Awards, Critics’ Choice Super Awards and Golden Globes.

Moore attributes part of the resonance of the film to how its themes have aligned with events unfolding on the world stage. “I think we’re all reconnecting with nature and yearning for the freedom that the characters in the film also yearn for,” he said. “So I think there is sort of a connection between the timing of the pandemic, and all the craziness of the last couple of years, and the needs and wants of our main characters.”

Looking to the future, Moore and Stewart can’t say for sure if they will be switching back as directors on future projects. “You never know,” says Moore. “We wouldn’t say no, we wouldn’t say it for sure.”

But with all the success the couple have enjoyed together, another collaboration seems like a safe bet. We didn’t really talk about the past Wolf walkers, But Wolf walkers worked really well, ”said Stewart. “We didn’t talk to each other and did a great project together.”

For now, Stewart says he’s committed to helping Cartoon Saloon through the pandemic, serving as “the connective tissue between different projects and different parts of the crew who all work from home.” If Moore or Stewart has another project in the works, they don’t talk about it yet.
